01 / Access

Start at the hatch and stop where safe access ends.

From a safe access point, note whether the animal is visible, how far it appears from the hatch, whether a stable walking surface exists, and whether ductwork, wiring, low framing or loose insulation limits movement.

02 / Insulation

Insulation changes both locating and cleanup.

Loose-fill or batt insulation can obscure a small carcass and can also be directly affected by fluids or residue. The useful question is not simply whether the attic “needs disinfecting,” but which materials were actually in contact with the source and whether those materials can be removed or cleaned.

• Ask whether affected insulation was identified and isolated.
• Separate carcass removal from any larger insulation recommendation.
• Do not assume an odor treatment alone addresses contaminated material.

03 / Scope

A complete scope should explain what happens after the animal comes out.

For a straightforward accessible carcass, the work may be limited. For a source in insulation or a confined void, the scope can include locating, removal of affected nearby material, bagging, cleanup of the accessible area, and documentation of any unresolved access or entry issue.

If another trade is needed to repair finishes, roofing, electrical components or other building materials, that should be clear rather than implied to be part of carcass removal.

04 / Recurrence

Removal answers “what is dead?” — not “how did it get in?”

If there are signs of current or repeated animal activity, a separate inspection for entry points may be worth discussing. Keep that decision distinct from the immediate carcass-removal request so you can evaluate the need and scope on its own.
